The role of a coating is to protect the steel structure of a vessel from corrosion. Corrosion weakens the steel and leads to failure through cracking. The coating itself can also suffer from cracking due to over application or lack of elasticity. Therefore, there is a need to be able to detect cracks in either the coating or the steel as early as possible.
