Filler Cracking Article Feature Image

Client: Owner of superyacht

The Project: One of the world’s most prestigious super yachts, was suffering from a filler cracking issue at the rear, close to the large stern door. Every time a repair was initiated the filler would crack in the same place with the problem increasing in size usually within a very short time. Major paint companies had tried to repair the area on several occasions but to date without success.

Our Role: Safinah was appointed to oversee the project management of a complete re-coat of the vessel taking into consideration the recurring cracking filler.

Knowing that three paint companies and at least two applicators had coated the vessel before, and that the problem still returned, suggested that to replace the existing schemes with yet another manufacturer was unlikely to succeed. It was considered that the cracking was linked to design, size and specification and therefore a more innovative approach would be required. Safinah was able to introduce a repair method involving fibre glass which allowed for reasonable movement within the structure but not enough to cause cracking.

How Safinah Added Value: The vessel was visited six months after leaving the refit yard and the repair method adopted was seen to have been successful. Safinah continues to work with this owner on a number of other yachts and projects.
